Balenciaga by Alexander Wang Pre-Fall 2015 Coat

This Balenciaga dress coat from Pre-Fall 2015 reflects Alexander Wang’s street-influenced interpretation of the house’s heritage. During his tenure as creative director (2012–2015), Wang sought to give Cristóbal Balenciaga’s architectural silhouettes an urban sensibility. The pink graffiti spray disrupts the refined structure of the coat, introducing a subversive edge that highlights Wang’s fascination with the contrast between luxury and the street.

Expertly tailored from a stiff, sculpting wool woven with a hint of silk, the fabric has a warm latte-brown tone. The silhouette is cocooning, recalling Balenciaga’s historic volumes, while a sharply nipped waist and exaggerated hips sculpt the body. Oversized fabric-covered buttons heighten the cartoonish form, echoed by the childlike naïveté of the candy-pink spray paint. The formal collar and angular welt pocket ground the piece in traditional tailoring, highlighting the contrast between Wang’s street references and Balenciaga's history. It is fully lined in a tonal coffee-hued silk-blend crepe.
