Prada Fall 2004 Coat and Skirt
This exceptional silk coat and matching skirt are from Miuccia Prada's Fall 2004 collection. Crafted in Italy from a tan wool-silk blend printed with black, computer-generated tie-dye, the ensemble embodies the season’s exploration of ancient artistry with digital-age experimentation.
This distinctive tie-dye fabric appeared throughout the collection, influenced by the 18th century landscape paintings of Caspar David Friedrich. As Vogue noted, the fabric became “a perfect conflation of old-world luxury with classic Prada techno fabric that stood as the symbol of the entire collection.” This rare ensemble - featuring a one-of-one tie-dye variation - exemplifies Prada’s ability to turn fabric into a statement. Prada herself described the collection as “a dream of extreme romanticism - the idea of 18-century painting, with video games. A romanticism between past and future.”
This coffee-brown and navy, wool-silk coat has a slight sheen to the fabric and is tailored to a classic overcoat style with wide lapels and a cocooning, straight-cut body. The sleeves are finished with button-adorned sleeve loops, and the back has a martingale half-belt in coordinating fabric. The rear of the coat has a vent. The inside of the collar is decadently finished with grey mink, but this collar lining can be removed as the wearer desires. There are welt pockets at the hips. The skirt is cut to a high-waist fit and has an A-line silhouette. It fastens at the centre back with a tonal zip. Both pieces are lined with coffee-brown satin.
