Thierry Mugler Spring 2000 Skirt Suit
From Thierry Mugler’s Spring 2000 collection, this white shot-silk skirt suit captures the designer’s unmistakable futuristic and sculptural aesthetic. The tailored jacket is cut with Mugler’s signature curved lines from stiff shot-silk which holds its shape. It is finished with three silver-toned, square snap closures, evoking his fascination with sleek, industrial detailing. The most striking feature is the precisely seamed shoulder cut-outs, which appear slashed by claws and add sci-fi sensuality to an elegant silhouette. The jacket is paired with a matching mini skirt, which closes at the back with the brand's signature angular snap-closure and a hidden zip. Both piece are lined in tonal satin.
The Spring 2000 collection was praised for moving beyond the designer’s darker, space-age narratives and reinterpreted his architectural tailoring in lighter fabrics and fluid materials such as silk and sheer organza. The same slash-like motif appeared on a black runway dress, cut open at the collar and hem. The slashed suit is a trademark Mugler move - appearing in the Fall 1990, Cruise 1993, Spring 1994, Fall 1997 and Spring 1998 shows (all pictured). Originally purchased from Mugler’s Mayfair boutique in early 2000 and worn only once for a wedding, this rare suit embodies the late-era Mugler ideal: sculptural discipline with a bold, futuristic twist.
