Versace Fall 1993 Bodysuit

From Gianni Versace’s Fall 1993 collection, this long-sleeved, high-cut bodysuit is cut from gossamer-fine mesh. The piece features an elaborate panel of black crochet and ribbonwork embroidery across the front - a recurring motif throughout the collection - artfully placed to preserve the wearer’s modesty. It fastens at the centre back with a long zip and at the crotch with two hook-and-eye clasps. The cuffs are detailed with four polished buttons which fasten with fabric loops.

Worn on the runway by supermodel Carla Bruni, the design exemplifies Versace’s confident interplay of craft and seduction, merging delicate handwork with the bold sexuality that defined his 1990s aesthetic. Often regarded as Versace’s subtle nod to the grunge movement, this was the one time he flirted with the anti-glamour mood of early-1990s fashion.
