Maison Margiela Spring 2015 Jacket

£495.00

This Maison Margiela jacket from the Spring 2015 collection exemplifies the house’s conceptual approach during the post-Martin, anonymously designed years. Following Martin Margiela’s departure in 2009, the brand was led by an internal design team rather than a single creative director. This was a deliberate decision, with CEO Giovanni Pungetti stating, “We want to stay avant-garde and provocative, but without a new creative director. It’s a challenge.” Among that nameless team was a young Demna Gvasalia, who would later go on to head up Balenciaga.

The jacket is cut from a cobalt-blue floral jacquard silk, a Japanese-inspired fabric used throughout the collection. Its structured silhouette and tie waist are offset by raw, torn hems - hallmarks of Maison Margiela's deconstructed aesthetic. As Vogue observed, “it was interesting to see pieces that looked obviously used or lived-in (usually the province of the house’s Artisanal collection).” The jacket has a box pleated, peplum waist and contast sleeves tailored from black wool. The body is unlined and the sleeves are lined with cream-and-black striped cloth that recalls the details of traditional menswear tailoring. The front of the jacket fastens with snap closures. The brand's iconic four white stitches can be seen on the back of the jacket.
