Stella McCartney Spring 2011 Waistcoat

From Stella McCartney’s Spring 2011 collection, this white silk double-breasted waistcoat reimagines classic tailoring with the designer’s signature sense of ease. Crafted from thick silk, the piece features a sharply tailored front with peak lapels and traditional button fastening, but turns to reveal an entirely naked back, anchored only by a slim waistcoat strap.

Shown on the runway in both black and white, these pieces epitomised McCartney’s ability to subvert traditional menswear codes with feminine confidence. As Vogue wrote, “she showed a pair of double-breasted backless vests, totally on trend and totally McCartney. Salma and Liv would no doubt approve", referrring to McCartney's friends and muses Salma Hayek and Liv Tyler. This waistcoat merges structure and sensuality, tailoring and skin - a perfect embodiment of “business in the front, party in the back”. It is partly lined in crepe and fastens with hidden tonal buttons.
