Christian Lacroix Fall 2001 Appliqué Corset

This Christian Lacroix corset was designed as part of the brand's Fall 2001 collection. Crafted from a textured brocade woven with sunflowers and twisting vines, it is a gentle coffee brown-pink hue. The corset is boned the whole way around and curved to emphasise the waist and jut out around the hips. It is embellished with abstract pieces of cream leather, cream embroidery and mesh. There is a slit in the left hip and, above this, sits a small circular cut-out lined with purple, textured chiffon. Below this falls fluttering panels of purple chiffon, cream lace and tonal brocade ties. The neckline is trimmed with purple chiffon ruffles. The corset is lined in pink and red silk satin, printed with the house’s signature painterly motif from the period. It closes along the right side with a hidden white zip.

Corsets in a spectrum of colours walked the runway as part of the Fall 2001 show, crafted from richly patterned fabrics, appliquéd and embroidered with fantastical detailing. Each was unified by a strapless silhouette, cinching the waist, curving around the hips, and finished with a ruffled neckline. Vogue described the runway as “a hypnotic jumble of sequins, patchwork, ruffles and colour-drenched prints.”
